About Ranco Lake Protected Area

Ranco Lake Protected Area centers around Ranco Lake, the fourth largest lake in Chile, situated in the Los Lagos Region of southern Chile. This protected area is celebrated for its striking combination of volcanic topography, lush temperate rainforests, and crystal-clear freshwater ecosystems. It is bordered by the Andes mountain range and includes a portion of the Malalcahuello-Nalcas National Reserve, enhancing its biodiversity and scenic variety. The region’s volcanic heritage is evident through nearby volcanic cones and hot springs, providing visitors with unique geothermal experiences. Important native flora includes southern beech forests, arrayán, and extensive wetland systems that serve as habitats for a rich variety of waterfowl, birds of prey, and endemic species such as the pudú (the world's smallest deer). Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the region’s multiple hiking trails with panoramic lake views, kayaking and canoeing on the lake’s calm waters, trout fishing known for salmonids, and horseback riding along traditional ranching routes. Cultural connections run deep here, with the Mapuche people historically inhabiting the area, reflected in interpretive sites and local crafts. Scenic towns like Futrono and Llifén provide welcoming gateways equipped with accommodations, local cuisine, and cultural events. The accessibility combined with the natural beauty and diverse recreational options makes Ranco Lake Protected Area a must-visit for travelers looking for authentic Patagonian nature experiences.
